জীন ভ্যালেন্টাইন; অনুবাদ- দেবলীনা সুর
কবি জীন ভ্যালেন্টাইনের জন্ম শিকাগো শহরে। জীবনের বেশীরভাগ সময়টাই কাটিয়েছেন নিউ ইয়র্কে। ১৯৬৫ সালে তিনি ইয়েল ইয়ংগার পোয়েটস সম্মান পেয়েছেন তাঁর প্রথম বই Dream Barker এর জন্য। ২০০৪ সালে ন্যাশনাল বুক অ্যাওয়ার্ড ফর পোয়েট্রি সম্মানে ভূষিত হন Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965-2003 বইটির জন্য।
লুসি কে? ইথিওপিয়ার উত্তরদিকে হাদার অঞ্চল থেকে সংগৃহীত একটি কঙ্কাল যার বয়স প্রায় সাড়ে বত্রিশ লক্ষ বছর। লুসির বিজ্ঞানসম্মত নাম অস্টালোপিথেকাস আফারনেসিস বা ‘সাদার্ন এপ অফ আফার’ অর্থাৎ ইথিওপিয়ার যে অঞ্চল থেকে কঙ্কালটি পাওয়া গেছিল। এটি এখনও পর্যন্ত সবচাইতে পুরনো পূর্ণাবয়ব মানুষের পূর্বসূরির দেহাবশেষ। ইথিওপিয়ার মানুষেরা এর নাম দিয়েছেন ‘দিনকেনেশ’— এই আমহারিক শব্দটির বাংলা তর্জমা করলে দাঁড়ায় ‘তুমি অপরূপা’। সভ্যতাপ্রাচীন কিছু অনুভূতি নিয়ে লুসি এসেছিল জীনের কবিতায়। জীন লুসিকে খুঁজেছেন উরুর মাঝের নিঃশব্দ গুঞ্জনে বা প্রসবকাতর আদিম চিৎকারে। কঙ্কালের গায়ে কবিতা জুড়ে এইভাবেই নির্মিত হয় লুসি।
